Top of the Pops - the story of 1981 8 Years, 3 Months ago

Fabulous show on bbc4, for anyone of my 40 something age this was the best year in music with Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Duran,Japan, The Human League and Kim Wilde making their breakthrough, and everyone of them British.
With hits like Vienna, Planet Earth, Tainted Love, Don't you want me, and Quiet Life this was a golden year in music.
The show also featured lots of behind the scenes footage and a rare appearance of Boy George as an audience member of totp. Even without the missing episodes featuring Saville and DLT, still an excellent documentary.

Mr King became part of the TOTP81 team in the Autumn of 1981, as (roughly ever four weeks until March 85) they included him on inserts from America covering the US hits - the US & UK charts were, at that stage, wildly different to each other. So much was happening in the UK pop scene that for a US record to break through over here it had to be Very Good Indeed (Keep On Loving You, Waiting For A Girl Like You, I Can't Go For That, I Love Rock & Roll, Africa, Rosanna etc) with plenty of great records that didn't break through here as they should have (Jessie's Girl, Don't Talk To Strangers, Heat Of The Moment, Little Red Corvette etc). He was therefore in the right place to report back to TOTP in mid-82 when the Americans got wind of the great stuff from here and the 'second British Invasion' occurred.
Did BBC Four not mention that? *innocent face*
