Very sad news that John Noakes has died. Most people will remember him, along with Peter Purves and Valerie Singleton as the definitive line-up of Blue Peter, when the show was must-see tv. John was a presenter with great passion, enthusiasum and honesty. Today he probably wouldn't get a chance as children's presenters have to be under 30, have model looks and have gone to stage school. Another icon of my childhood has gone.
I know that this shouldn't be on the tipsheet, I posted it here by mistake. However Blue Peter did often feature music, including Abba at the height of their fame, when they rarely made tv appearances.
For me, as a regular kid, John Noakes made Blue Peter more watchable. Peter Purves was too much like a teacher trying too hard to be trendy. Val Singleton was Antie Val, very proper, but in a nice way. Lesley Judd was just nice.
John came across as very natural, and he was the Action Man of the show. He might have been totally different when not on screen, but he made a positive contribution to my growing up.
He was an inspiration.
