TOPIC: Happy Birthday Radio One
#166665
Happy Birthday Radio One 6 Years, 6 Months ago
But note the absence of Gambo and Savile in the celebrations. Good old BBC - not only reflecting the new British judicial rule of Guilty unless they can prove Innocence but even ignoring the truth in the desperate rush to appear politically and morally correct (though John Peel seems to feature). Wonder if DLT is in there? Suspect not. Someone should insert a rocket into Lord Hall Hall's orifice.

Incidentally - why is the BBC pushing Radio One when Radio Two started at the same time?

I think the celebrations for radio 1 are rather muted considering how important it was. It was the first national pop station in the uk. The Mirror gives a good feature on it however.

Even mentioning Chris Denning who was jailed for 13 years for child abuse. I'm sure if DLT and Saville didn't feature so heavily in it's history it would be given a much bigger celebration. Top of the Pops 50th was also largely ignored 3 years ago.

Can't remember when I listened to Radio 1. I wonder if they will mention sacking veteran DJs to appeal to younger audience but fell flat.

Radio 1 was only created to rival pop pirates which are still going.

Chart music is dead and kids are buying vinyl of 80s music.

Only about 2% of all music listened to is on vinyl.

Where does that figure come from ? Please remember more and more people are looking for albums on eBay as they don't all want the new 180 grams Lps.

I have got an orginal America Homecoming Lp from 70s it has a nice crackly sound.

I still have a letter, in my archives, from Radio One inviting me to an interview to be a possible presenter. That was in 1991. It had taken them about five years for them to decided to consider me, during which period the station's policies had changed and I had become as disillusioned as DLT. I decided not to pursue it, but I have good memories of the earlier days of Radio One.

I struggle to find anyone who listens to it today, although I'm sure there are still those who do.

Things must have been getting desperate, for them to have even considered a total unknown like me, and the last thing they really needed was another rebel.
