TOPIC: ELO - Jeff Lynne
#204837
ELO - Jeff Lynne 3 Years, 3 Months ago
The other day on the radio came Wild West Hero; I'd not heard it in ages (one of the more obscure ELO tracks) and ended up sitting in my parked car until it ended; it was SOOO good. Jeff Lynne - a hugely under rated talent. His entire career has been fascinating yet he's not as rated as he should be. The end of the song is brilliant. Do check him out if you're young (I HATE young people).

Just a pity he has only one drum sound and it always sounds like someone's knocking your wall down. Great songs though.

I am not fan of his music but he certainly has talent. If I hear Mr Blue Sky again I will knock my wall down bloody wretched song.

I absolutely loathe it.
I like lots of the other stuff though, only we never hear it. Just the one song, over and over.

I really like him but that bloody drum sound. My idea of a good producer is someone who engages with the artist and brings out their distinctive sound. When Jeff produces Roy Orbison, you hear those drums. When he produces George Harrison, you hear those drums. When he produces Tom Petty, you hear those drums. Thud Thud Thud.

I started this Drum Sound thing - well, inspired by Phil Spector and Hal Blaine and even more by superb producer Steve Barri (Tommy Roe, the Archies, etc) - my efforts in the early 1970's were called The Year of the Drum. The reason I did it was becoming aware of the importance of clubs and rhythm. I love Jeff's drum sound.

I see what you mean - I always asked the pub/club DJ's to play your version Ways To Be Wicked it's an amazing cover; even if no one listened I actually did.

Thanks Honey, it's a superb Cover of a Tom Petty song - Lone Justice never got the recognition they deserved either.

Funny you say that GM; inspired by your and Honey's posts (and half a dozen E-Mails I've had) I dug it out and listened. It really works, doesn't it. Then I went on to a Lone Justice/Maria McKee search. She was (and is) VERY under rated, isn't she? Some sensational songs she wrote, too. Her links and projects all seem dead now though.

Maria McKee is still making music.

I do recommend this one by her JK.
