Evelyn Thomas, the singer best known for her huge hit High Energy which hit No5 in June 1984 has passed away a few days ago. The song actually dropped out the UK Singles Top 40 this week forty years ago. This was one of the first trailblazing hits that defined a new genre of dance music which became referred to as hi-NRG. What made this track for me was the lengthy note hold during the song. High Energy was a German No1 but in her home nation Stateside it failed to make much impact, only just getting to No85 on the mainstream Hot100 there even though it did make No1 on the dance chart there. Evelyn Thomas had to wait 8 years to make her significant mark, having previously charted early in 1976 with the less well known Weak Spot which got to No26. Evelyn Thomas was 70.
What a great track and memory of the summer in 1984.
