Reading on ROTD the Gnarls Barclay track "Crazy" has never been officially sent out to radio, there's just an Mp3 of it knocking around. (Sounds like a clever marketing ploy doesn't it?)

You may remember me whinging that they should get it released quick as I heard it in November but the release date wasn't until March. My reckoning was that people want it now so download the free version and be fed up with it by it's release date so not buy it.

But then, on the flip-side this kind of behaviour clearly hasn't hurt the AM's much has it! (Saying that, for all we know they could have doubled their sales had they not have given music away... but I doubt it).

Then I read that CD sales are incredibly strong right now.

I don't suppose we'll ever know for sure but it looks as though (and something I've said for a while) free downloading is doing nothing but good for the industry IF the music isn't pap. Hopefully we'll see the end of albums with 1 hit and a score of fillers.

For some time I've thought the promotional potential of the internet has been under estimated (nm) 18 Years, 1 Month ago

Our website counter, is going round at about an average of 6 an hour, on the MP3`s, we could sometimes go only about a hit a month before the Tipsheet viewers, started looking, and of course the anonymous ones.
How this turns into pennies I do not know yet.

The point is, you have to have something to promote. The MP3s should either promote a full CD or a tour or something. Otherwise, it's promo for what, "getting yuor name out" when there are no agents touting your concerts. As in all things promo, it's worth working out a strategy and sticking to it.

I hear you Michael, however, if the name is out there people will want to come and see you. Touting tickets when nobody has heard you can, and often does, lead to poor ticket sales and a disappointing gig.

Actually Kev, going back to the original first bit of this thread...
I personally would never "accidently" leave an MP3 knocking about on the net......
On a serious note, this is much more fun , than the days in which I would nearly freeze to death, and drag myself from meeting to meeting on the tube trains, my Mum said I would get pneaumonia(!), and I did!

The main problem with trying to download this track is nobody seems to know how to spell the name!

I have it downloaded as Gnarls Berkley??

Re:Gnarls Barclay, AM's, CD sales and free Mp3's 18 Years, 1 Month ago
As in, TipSheet MB might be ranked No. 1 on Google results for 'Gnarls Barclay', but that can't give much ammunition for boasting really, because it's based on a misspelling of the act's name.

It's like boasting you've got great search results for 'Kelley Klarkson'- you're bound to- you're the only one spelling it that way.

Just being pedantic, as the psuedonym suggests.

And that's not to poo-poo the great numbers and posts you have flooding in. It's all good. Keep it coming.

I thought it was Miles rather than Gnarls for a while, that's what it sounded like Zane was saying.

If he insists on having such an odd name he should expect to have people getting it wrong! So there
