Classic bass lines..... 18 Years, 1 Month ago
I have been tutoring classic bass lines to pupils, which amazingly enough, is not in the curriculum, hey! ask Gene Simmons:whistle:
But here`s a list for you, any more ideas that you all have I would be greatful for.
1.Good Times...Chic
2.Lets Dance..Bowie (nb, same bassist)
3.Silly Love Songs ..Macca
4.I dont Want to go To Chelsea ...Costello
5.Guns of Brixton..the Clash
6.Lessons In love..Level 42
7.School days ...Stanley Clarke
8.Birdland...Weather Report
9.Wherever I Lay My hat..Paul Young
10.Play That funky Music..Chilli Peppers or Wild Cherry.

On a lower down thread, you will see the simple idea of the David Essex, "Rock On" bass notes tipped.

Terribly sorry Martin but the Motown bass player (I forget his name) was so superb; I based my entire arrangement for my Weathermen version of It's The Same Old Song on his bass line and often Motown classics were built after he and the drummer laid down their basic tracks.
Every Motown 60's hit should be in your Top Ten!

Anything by Donald "Duck" Dunn, is classic and very innovating, and also by James Brown`s player is too.
The Motown guy, I agree , was superb, and I do not know his name either.
The biggest problem I arrive at in teaching, is that all the pupils seem to want to be Flea, and organise their posturing before anything else , including theory.
Which is why I had my little nick at the Kiss bass player, after watching "Rock School".
I agree with you about the Motown stuff though, what people need to understand about the instrument in the sixties, was that it was so new, and any song in which you could hear a memorable bass line, played by a genuine innovative musician, should be in a rock and pop hall of fame.
"Soul Man", does that bass line sit or what?
Another topic that occured to me, was that in some cases, the bass leads the drums and vice versa, now, these days , with new technolodgy, it can be irrelevent, which is why the Artic Monkeys and Nizlopi, playing naturally are so important for the future of genuine music skills.

Ah Godiver...I am reliably informed that line was actually played on a guitar through an effect of some sort.
I did ask the guy who told me this information, and he started to explain, and then said, "awww you would not understand Mart!"

My mate was explaining how it was done, and I sort of glazed over:blink:
He recently created a twelve string sound whilst useing a Les Paul for me, so I imagine it is the said beastie board you mentioned.
I hate any effects boards in my way so much, that the bass head I use has compression built in, to avoid extra wires.
This in fact brings me to another none cableing issue, I am reliably informed , that the guy from Muse, has his effects pedals installed into his guitar, and a switching system to go between them, it must weigh a ton!
It is amusing about the White Stripes bassline though, I have taught it many a time, and tried to explain my way out of why I should not be teaching it, I now have an excuse! Thanks Kev.

John Entwhistle had an amazing flowing hand technique, that has not been seen since,he played bass like he was stroking feathers.
Also, he did a bass solo on a hit(My generation), this is an accolade in itself.

My favourite base line - and one which everyone should hear at least once - is from 'You Got Soul' by Man and Wife. Real cool stuff!

Errrrrrm Godiver? Sorry sweetie, but I believe Riders On the Storm to be bass pedals from the keyboard player.
Just shows us all though, nobody notices a bass player unless he or she drops a clanger!

"Cocaine" by Dilinger - probably not a best bass line, but certainly one of the best known.

"That's the Way (uh-uh) I Like It (uh-uh)" by KC and the Sunshine Band.

Who played bass on "Sex Machine"? Was it Bootsy Collins? Try and nail that one as an exercise in funky efficiency. We are not worthy?

What bass line did Ian Dury "share" to write "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll"?

"The Magnificent (deep breath) Seven" by The Clash.

On and on and on-on and on, the bassline stomps until the break of dawn.

Dry Cleaner From Des Moines (Jaco Pastorius, from Joni Mitchell's 'Mingus' Edit: but the live version on Shadows & Light is better...)
Refuge Of the Road (Jaco again, Joni's 'Hejira')
Kansas City Milkman (Mark King, Level 42 'True Colours')
Red Barchetta (Geddy Lee, Rush)
Middle Englad Cross (Me - cheeky, I know -: Stryngs 'Love and Other Vices'... unreleased, demo, hence abrupt end. Thought I'd throw it in 'cos I'm rather pleased with it.)
And tons of other stuff I can't recall right now...

Post edited by: Marshy, at: 2006/02/23 21:03

It was an Electro Harmonix POG I think

Certainly what he was using on Blue Orchid and it will also do the Seven Nation Army sound

Take a look at www.ehx.com
