Derek Hatton rejoins Labour 5 Years, 2 Months ago
A coincidence that his application to rejoin has been approved as seven Labour MPs resign? Wonder if he'll be standing as an MP if there are by-elections, though he has apparently ruled himself out of contesting Luciana Berger's seat. If that's a recent photo in the article, he looks younger than 71.

Derek Hatton rejoins Labour after 34 years

Derek Hatton has been readmitted to the Labour Party, 34 years after he was expelled by then-leader Neil Kinnock.

The 71-year-old former deputy leader of Liverpool City Council was kicked out for belonging to Militant Tendency.

He revealed in September that he had applied to rejoin after being inspired by Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

Mr Hatton told the BBC he had rejoined and "it's good to be back", insisting he had "stayed absolutely solid for the Labour Party" for 34 years.

His readmission to the party comes as seven MPs resigned in protest at Mr Corbyn's approach to Brexit and anti-Semitism.

The MPs include Liverpool Wavertree MP Luciana Berger, who said Labour had become institutionally anti-Semitic and she was "embarrassed and ashamed" to stay.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Mr Hatton described them as "pathetic" and said that "there is an argument that Luciana Berger went before she was pushed".

However, he ruled himself out of standing as an MP in her place if there was a vacancy.

I've always tended to be very much a supporter of capitalism economically whilst extreme left wing socially - an odd mix, depending on responsibility - examples; Bill Gates; Bruce Springsteen - these are role models. Whilst I am really no supporter of Corbyn's economic policies, he strikes me as a decent man - as does John McDonnell who I like more every time he speaks. Yes - they are far more left wing than I am but on many things we agree (Trident; Palestine). I'm still planning to vote Labour at the next election but the Brexit position really worries me. I think they should bite the bullet and be openly anti Brexit and pro a second referendum.

I was involved with Militant Tendancy 30 years ago,as a political advisor...long story, was never stupid enough to believe in their policies...but it was fun,the girls were nice and sexy....and Mr Hatton was great fun to be around when I lived up North...

...Hatton,like Ken Livingstone was very good with the media...even with all the powerful papers against him,got himself some great publicity....something Corbyn and Abbott have been very bad at...but he of course knew his subject well, unlike them, who are third rate politicians not even worthy of being basic cannon-fodder MPs......not seen or heard much of him lately...

For calling on Jews to condemn the Israeli government for acts he felt were wrong? My God, freedom of speech - whether misguided or not - is disappearing.

'The ECHO understands that the tweet - which has now been deleted - included criticism of the actions of the Israeli government and urged British Jews to speak out against its actions.'

Given the reason some of the MPs walked out it is not surprising....they will now try to be seen to be 'tough'......on anti Jewish rhetoric....

....Expect more silly actions from the political parties in the run up to Brexit...

A Good Evening Honey

Evening, SM.
I think someone is going to have to explain all this to me, slowly and carefully, because I cant for the life of me see how this could be anti-Jewish.

Well, well, that was quick!

The tweet, which resurfaced after he was readmitted to the party on Monday, said: “Jewish people with any sense of humanity need to start speaking out publicly against the ruthless murdering being carried out by Israel!”

Drawing attention to the tweet, the Labour MP Ian Austin said: “Keen to address the Jewish community’s concerns and widespread worries that the Labour party has been taken over by a sectarian hard-left faction, the party yesterday readmitted Derek Hatton.”

Hatton’s tweet has since been deleted.

Perhaps it's rather like saying "Black people with any sense of humanity need to start speaking out publicly against the ruthless murdering being carried out by Zimbabwe'.

For one thing, it seems to imply that the people concerned may be short on humanity.
