Midem 2007… general opinion was that it was the quietest in ages… fewer “big hitters” but with the collapse of the old model, there are fewer big hitters anyway (though I suspect they don’t know it yet)… long chat with Harvey Goldsmith – his British Music Experience in the Dome sounds like an excellent idea… I was most impressed by Webbo’s handling of the under attended but very worthwhile chat with Europe’s iTunes head of Independent Labels Miriam Lockshin and there was a wealth of intelligent and helpful information there… Well done to Jon Webster and the BPI for organising it… had some fascinating meetings, both social and business… Steve Greenberg was on cracking form with all the US gossip… Daniel and Deborah Glass continued to be loyal and supportive friends as well as great sources for information… Seymour Stein was there as always (though I think I’m even more an original attendee than him)… Claude Nobs was honoured – I remember spending a lot of time with him when I did a series of BBC TV shows at Montreux in the mid 80’s… I think he was running Warners Europe at the time… Paul McGinnis (U2) was ebullient as ever; Ralph Simon has lost weight; Jeremy Silver looks exactly the same as he did 20 years ago; stars from Nile Rogers to George Clinton; Eddie Levy came over and we had a good old gossip; several old and new Tipsheeters came up and said hello… a terrific time, literally hundreds of familiar faces and good wishes… not one negative comment or vibration and many raised eyebrows at my glaring Moschino suit and flash red Rolls Royce plus enormous interest in EARTH TO KING (we gave away over 350 copies and there were only three of us there).
