SONGWRITING...
Monday, 26 June 2006
I've come up with a theory about songwriting after listening to Elaine Paige on BBC Radio Two yesterday and singing along with the brilliant I'm Not At All In Love from The Pyjama Game (which I'd totally forgotten).

Then afterwards, Russell Davies' excellent series on great lyricists. Oscar Hammerstein - what a giant and what fantastic lyrics - even all these years later.

But these days, older writers are scorned. Why?

I know exactly why. Because our generation made it "in for a dig" not to sing your own songs.

Madness. Writing and composing improves with experience.

We ought to be seeing young performers doing songs by older writers. That way the entire music creativity would improve.
