I met Monkhouse as well once and he was as nice as pie.

Possibly such a talented person of Roy's calibre, got people's backs up & they didn't think that Roy knew best, when he probably did.
Seems to be compared to someone still much alive, Bruce Forsyth. But I can't fathom, any real talent in him. He made his living out of taking the piss of the general public.
Though I met Forsyth, when I was in hospital once (when he was doing some opening, or summat) & found him to be the most pigheaded celebrity arsehole, I'd ever met. You'd of thought he was the King or something. King Tosspot!
Then on another occasion, I met Bob Monkhouse & he was just so plain nice & friendly & hilarious, on opening a Sainsburys in the 70s.

I gather from some friends I have who worked at the Beeb that Mr Castle was known as a 'very difficult performer' to deal with and had initials placed on him to that effect to warn others. I can't remember what they were but it was something uncomplimentary.
