Pru	Technically, these days, a quenelle refers to a shape rather than a thing, hence its use for ice cream, mash and dumplings. So I can see what the gesture is called that, but the pics of people doing it outside Auschwitz, for example, suggests an intention that doesn't require Roland Barthes to decipher.
JK2006	I love quenelles - frequently served in stock or soup; delicious filled with a mousse; shaped like a small curved arm, which is where I suppose the gesture got its name.
