British athletes travelling to Russia for the Winter Olympics have been advised not to wear team kit on arrival, Sky News understands.

Officials from the British Olympic Association (BOA) warned members of Team GB to keep a low profile while in the country, particularly while travelling through capital city Moscow.

And a statement issued to Sky News by the BOA said the advice was not in response to any specific threat and was part of a "common sense approach".

'When challenged, the mayor admitted that he was not certain there were no gay people in Sochi: "I am not sure, but I don't bloody know them."'

'Boris Nemtsov, former Deputy Prime Minister and now a leader of the opposition, said the mayor's claim was laughable.

"As far as I know there are several gay clubs in Sochi.

"How do they survive? Why they are not bankrupt?"'
