Grand Budapest Hotel showed that the art of structuring a narrative is not quite dead in Hollywood. Birdman - although I've always loved Michael Keaton - has inspired so much cinephile fussing over its long takes and actorly reflections that it's obscured the horrible clumsiness of its storytelling. The usual Mike Leigh puffery about improvisation has done the same to the lack of a proper screenplay in Mr Turner.
But best of all it is there in Best Cinematography and must, surely, win.
Delighted that Grand Budapest Hotel has loads of nominations. Saw it with Charlie and Emily about a year ago. We loved it.
Must watch Boyhood.
