Yes we're often poo poo'ed as pedants but misuse of language is far more serious than it appears as this stupid incident illustrates and one of the results is - as you say - observers take their eyes off the real ball and ignore the real problem.

It doesn't help in the US that they still have organisations to represent 'People of Color'. Martin Luther King talked of 'citizens of color' in his I Have a Dream speech. The culture has tied itself up in knots about terminology, it's ridiculous to attack individuals who get confused when they obviously don't have any malicious intent. The problem with the internal squabbles about politically correct terminology is that there are rarely any public debates or announcements, there are just unexplained changes in policy which leave the average member of the public bemused. Another one in this country is favouring 'woman' over 'female,' as in 'Britain's first 'woman bishop'. You'd never say 'man bishop,' you'd say 'male bishop, or teacher, or singer, or whatever,' but obviously there's now an unspoken belief that 'female' is more rooted in patriarchy than 'woman' (no explanation, of course, of a very dubious argument), so now all the media dutifully bow to the inconsistency. It's all strangely coy about something that some claim to be passionate about. If you don't publicise it and make it clear, don't complain when people are confused.

After several weeks in sunny North Africa I'm as brown as you, Hedda dear. Or should I say "coloured"? Actually the colour is pink, soon to be grey.
hedda
well we are all coloured..you lilly white and me a gorgeous suntanned bronze that matches my Meadow Gold hair rinse.
Now everyone apologises for the slightest thing.
So much for Je Suis Charlie and all that claptrap (with apologies to the poor souls murdered)
well may they claim there is Free Speech but there is also consequences.
