Maundy Gregory was also a mate of WC.
Not only did Winston ask 'cash for questions' - he also sold titles.
Google - Maundy, to see how so many (for example, Brabazon, Wray, Cavendish/Devonshire/Curzon/) bought their status.
Many still (families) are part of the Consevatives.
Macmillan married a Duke's daughter (Dukedom bought by a Derbyshire farmer) - but was not good enough (for their elevated status), although a good Prime Minister...
Hence - she lived with another chap for decades. A PM's wife - but nobody told us.

Most interesting watching the tributes to realise he was a very flawed man who made more bad decisions than good ones but at the time of need came roaring through. A bit like my heroes - and rivals to Churchill as Greatest Brit Ever - Dickens and Shakespeare. Rereading The Old Curiosity Shop (as I've been doing over the past few months) there are quite dreadful passages next to sheer genius.
