I don't dismiss him out of hand - but I'm beginning to think he's a "re-Brand" (pun fully intended) of David Icke - a Pied Piper for the beards & tattoos generation(s). Some of what he says is good, but it's peppered with 'the agenda' and thus smacks of an 'approved distraction', and its that that will ultimately dull any good he is doing. |

As usual the answer to the question is probably a mix of many things. I find him annoying but, like the Mail which enjoys crucifying him (and some other things, like financial rival the BBC), the truth is he speaks a lot of truth, if in an irritating way. Yes, democracy does NOT work, and more and more people are starting to notice this. Yes, extremists are created by our society in many ways, though not in all ways. Yes, we should be looking at the bigger picture instead of finding simplistic solutions to complex problems. And those very solutions create further problems because of their nature.
Russell takes the intelligent route of fighting fire with fire. He phrases his answers in equally simplistic and annoying statements calculated to grab headlines and trick tabloids into simplistic fury. That alienates the more intelligent viewers and readers. But we are not likely to do anything about the problems anyway.
Since the answers are complicated and require great effort and energy, we tend to grumble and complain but do very little. Especially those of us reaching the ends of our useful lives. Oh for God's sake, let the younger generation sort it out. If they can't see what's broken and are unable to mend it, it's a problem for them, their children and future generations. We golden oldies are far too busy sorting out what to do when we reach heaven. Harp lessons, how to walk on clouds, which polish to use on our haloes, the new language of angels, whether to put salt on mannah... |
