... until the cat arrived. The mice appeared after a new housing estate was built on a nearby field. Fortunately, with one of the houses came a cat which quickly made friends with us and cleared out all the mice. Not seen even one mouse dropping since.

My mother had a mouse problem.
Cutting back next-door's ivy back on an adjoining wall (and poison etc) removed the problem.
They lived in it during the summer and winter but came in to scavenge, mainly during the winter.
So if you have a mouse habitat too near your home de-habitat it
Block hole up, they can get through very small holes though.
