md He is echoing the character of Mr Dawes Snr (remember the one played by someone called 'Navckid Keyd'?) before he got the joke!
JK2006 Van Dyke, according to the Times, apologises for his awful cockney accent in Mary Poppins. Hey Dick, that's part of the charm. Rather like Brosnan in Mamma Mia - we don't always need great singing or accuracy.
