I went many times when I was living in New York (seemed a lifetime) and was amazed to read 54 only lasted for under 4 years(taken over by someone else when the owners were on tax avoiding charges but it was all over by then)
Which book is this?
On one memorable NY's Eve I went with the famed Aussie performer Peter Allen ( The Boy From Oz) and a lady friend (yes we were never refused entry) and a drugged woman plonked down besides us and...expired !!
The story was later immortalized in this excellent Vanity Fair article. There has never been, and never will be again, a nightclub like Studio 54.
Brilliant article in the Times about the classic disco in New York in the late 70s - I was in there dozens of times (never refused entry; too gorgeous). Looking forward to the film about it.
