I'm only guessing here hedda,but it was more of a one off scheme to stimulate the economy....you are indeed quite right,with forewarning it would not work....but Ebay and Amazon did use the idea a few years later with black Friday... ...this heatwave is getting too much,I may need to cool off in the pool!
