Police condemn speculation about violence at Tommy Robinson rally
Supporters and counter-protesters clashed at far-right activist’s event in Oldham

Of course we can never really know who is causing violence at these events.

Being fabulously old..I recall on our second family trip to Australia I decided as a wide eyed youth to attend a demonstration against US president Lyndon Johnson who was in town as our hotel was on the route. Opposite there was an anti-Vietnam demo so I joined.

It became a famous incident as we demonstrators surged out onto the street..we had no choice as we were being pushed from behind..and the then PM Harold Holt ( who famously disappeared shortly after swimming off a Melbourne beach..they claim a Chinese submarine picked him up) in the car with Johnson said to the driver "run over the bastards".

I didn't get arrested but many did..a policeman collared me and being 14 I said "I'm a tourist..I don't know what's happening" !!!..he let me go.

But talking to others shortly after they commented how those pushing us forward from the back were 4 police officers in plain clothes..agent provocateurs who they even knew by name..the idea being to embarrass the anti-war demonstrators.

Watching this embarrassing video with Aussies gushing over Johnson..I can see why..
( my dad asked where I had been as he said "we got a great view from our 4th floor window of the president..we tried to find you". I said I had taken a walk in the park.
( did anyone notice my mis-direction in the other post?. No thought not )
