Barney Italy now budgeting €25 billion - instead of €7.5 billion, as decided last week - to combat Coronavirus.

Barney With almost 10,000 infections now - Italy now has the most, per capita, of any country.

But why the extreme measures and lockdown there - compared to other countries?

Largely because of pensioner demographics; Italy has the most in Europe.

Second only to Japan, wordwide.

And of EU countries, Italy provides well for its pensioners - about 77% of all pensions goes to OAPs.

Italy also gives the second highest EU percentage of any country's GDP to it's old age pensioners.

Undoubtedly this monetary burden has caused the drastic action - which itself will have financial repercussions, in terms of tourism etc.

However - because of the huge cost of looking after pensioners - urgent action was required.

We also look after our pensioners well - financially, and in terms of highly expensive NHS services.

Pure economics would suggest firm action here soon - as we too are high on the OAP benefits League table.

From the potential financial consequences viewpoint alone...
