The Bank of Ambrosiano debacle showed that the secretive and controversial financial affairs of the Vatican - aren't anything new.
Movies have been made about them (Godfather/3) - and books written (Dan Brown). Murders are a regular feature - with Calvi, and the Pope in 1978 - in this real life story.
Calvi (God's banker) spirited away at least $2 billion - and he wasn't the first head of the Vatican bank to have his own agenda.
Illinois man - Cardinal Marcinikus ('you can't run a church on hail marys') was another who thought transparency was a sin!
30 years after Calvi was found hanging from a bridge in London (suicide or Mafia hit - almost certainly, the latter) - George Pell takes over church finances.
And soon pays the price with false child abuse allegations - after opining that corruption was at a high level, in the Vatican.
Unfortunately, Francis - an octogenarian, with too much on his plate - won't have time.
To get to the bottom of this complicated and festering can of worms...

I understand but more and more media are picking up on the story and I believe it will gain traction first in Italy and then spread.
Pell reputedly (and this is from an excellent source) discovered $100Ms in one account that had been basically hidden from accountants and as much as $1Billion in a Vatican Swiss bank account. This is money believed to belong to the Calabrian Mafia which has for decades used the Vatican as a safe depository unable to be accessed by any outside law body because of Vatican Sovereignty.
Aided by powerful corrupt Cardinals Pope Francis has been put back in his box and will most likely coast along for eternity without rocking the boat.
People still think the Robert Calvi murder at Blackfriars Bridge was a "suicide" rather than a typical Mafia message. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Calvi
# The Pope has now appointed a former allegedly "investigative" Mafia expert Judge to oversee finances ..one who has locked up many Mafia figures who all just happen to be not terribly important so it's..business as usual !

George Pell tells Andrew Bolt the man who testified against him may have been 'used'
“I wonder whether he was used,” Pell continued. “I don’t know what this poor fellow was up to.” He did not elaborate on who the complainant may have been used by. But he spoke of corruption in the Vatican, and also made allegations of corruption in Victoria. Pell said he was unpopular among some Vatican officials for his efforts to get the institution’s finances in order. Asked by Bolt “how high up the corruption goes”, Pell responded: “Who knows.”
“It’s a little bit like Victoria,” Pell said. “You’re not quite sure where the vein runs, how thick and broad it is, and how high it goes.” Asked if police had persecuted him, Pell said: “Well I think the onus is on them, in the face of that evidence, to show why that’s not true.”
