true Barney but Pell's words are not an acknowledgement that he knew..but that he recognized the Church had failed.
The Royal Commission, as have so many others, simply accused Pell of lying about the past (on nil evidence) when he was a lowly priest ( and one doing office work unlike say, the abuser Gerard Ridsdale and Paul Bongiorno who were taking kids on camping trips etc. 
Pell has for most of his career been in administration but not in charge of administration unlike the vast majority of priests who were "tending their flock" (or raping it). Since he became the Top Dog there hasn't been a single case of abuse. Never acknowledged in the media.
The RC (without a scintilla of evidence) accuse him of "knowing" but lying about his knowledge as a priest and yet, haven't condemned one single other priest in the same position.
It's utterly bizarre and the first time I've seen a Royal Commission or Inquiry make such odd claims backed by no evidence.
Now local media are ramping up that this will lead to a flood of claims. But they're simply listening to ambulance chasing lawyers ( Hello Slater & Gordon !). I reckon the first case will fall over because there is no proof of the Royal Commission's claims. Fortunately It's Not About The Money.
And the alarm by various top legal eagles is rumbling just as it was over Pell's convicton- they are amazed the Commissioners would really be so foolish to make such claims without evidence (and in fact, evidence to the opposite)
I believe this will be a slow burner. There has been undoubtedly a conspiracy to Get Pell with numerous actors all with their own reasons.
When the left wing Victorian Labor Party is booted out of power as it surely will be in under 2 years and a conservative government takes power, I know they are itching for a Judicial Inquiry into the entire Pell matter because a) most of the conservative Victorian MPs are livid about the entire case 2) the unbelievable corruption in seniority in Victorian Police while the Vic government has been repeatedly warned by security services the Calabrian Mafia have infiltrated them & control senior roles and 3) the opportunity to bash both the Federal & State Labor Parties will be irresistible and importantly, their hatred for the ABC who they have been trying to kill off via a 1000s cuts will be a bonus.
## It's why I'm furious with the ABC and the crew of dilettante, smug arrogant presenter nobs (that's enough insults dear  ) in the joint who feel so secure on their high paid government drip they think they are above the ordinary fray.
### My dear pal, a former ABC top producer who now administers the ABC pension fund thinks as I and is really worried her former pals will wreck the joint.
And I'm not a Pell "fan" but a Big Fan of Justice and it's severely lacking in the Pell case although I'm as I said, heartened that we have the High Court here which is now obviously not influenced by powerful State interests.
Of course this case was overthrown when Archbishop Wilson was jailed for "covering up abuse" on the word of one person.(unlike Pell when the one person who claimed he told Pell of abuse..had his claim rejected by the Royal Commission. (tossing him a bone ?)

Pell gave evidence from Rome, via video link, in 2016, to the Australian commission - inquiring into child sex abuse by clergy.
And said that the church had made 'enormous mistakes' in dealing with claims of sexual abuse.
'Certainly in Australia, (the church) has mucked things up, has let people down'.
When asked whether he knew if paedophiles were active in churches under his watch - he replied:-
- I'm not here to defend the indefensible' -
Most will be influenced by Pell's own words - as he was in charge.
However Pell didn't act any differently than other Cardinals/Archbishops.
In Louisville, Tanzania, Sao Paulo, India, Glasgow and Dublin.
By following instructions from Rome - on how to deal with the far reaching abuse.
And - perhaps most significantly - is that the clerical perpetrators weren't reported to the police/legal authorities.
On instructions from Rome.
Thankfully - at last - that directive has been recinded, by Francis.

No.
Not going to speculate about the mindset of an entire society in the 1960s / 70s.
Bolt does put it well..on one hand the Royal Commissioners and every media pundit claim Pell must have known of abuse at the time as it was almost "common knowledge" so where were :
1. the police
2. the media including the well funded regional ABC studio
3.parents
4. the 100s of other Catholic workers and priests in a Catholic dominated town.
The Royal Commission- in one of the oddest claims- have decided they know better than George Pell what he was thinking or aware of in the 1970s.
Perhaps Mystic Meg was on the Royal Commission staff.
There are however other utterly bizarre matters that are factual rather than "gossip" and "he should have been conscious" etc.
Example: As I previously posted about ABC Political reporter Paul Bongiorno who shared a bedroom with the worst offender Gerard Ridsdale and says he saw nothing.
Now I see it was reported in Australian newspapers by- Andrew Bolt.
Why is Bongiorno not vilified as was Pell? Why is Pell the scapegoat?

Note the fairly comprehensive claims by the victim which have been completely ignored by every single Australian media pundit apart from the usual "conservative" writers and most especially, the ABC where Bongirono now works.
And then this .. my mind is not usually Boggled but it is now, nay even Flabbergasted at the Chutzpah.
And this: they attack the likes of me because we say it's a Pell Pile On & a Get Pell campaign but here an often sensible writer George Monbiot basically infers all Pell claims are true because he's a "notorious climate denier" (where does he get "notorious" from?). Pell doesn't advocate for climate denial- he just says he doesn't believe it. This is an ugly example (but one of 1000s) of kicking a man when he's down. Shameful.
Such is the madness.

I'm bowled over by the so-called Royal Commissioner's report into church child abuse today which has made unbelievable claims about Pell not backed by a single piece of evidence.
The entire Pell case is quite terrifying. The stitch-up nearly snared Pell but it goes so high it's quite frightening.
The Royal Commissioners have made extraordinary assumptions and decided they know what Pell should have known 45 frigging years ago.
But the plot thickens as my Italian Pal sends me snippets (to try and do my head in)
He has copies of all the RC Report and evidence..how I don;t know.
And he stings me with a new revelation today.
I've reported before that when the Church's worst abuser Father Gerard Ridsdale was abusing in Ballarat , Pell was just a priest- as was another Priest, Father Paul Bongiorno. Bongiorno is now a top political reporter on the ABC national broadcaster. Bongiorno claims he never saw evidence of Ridsdale's abuse even though he shared a bedroom with the man while Pell share the same house with about 10 others.
Now my pal points me to something very relevant: one of Ridsdale's victims gave evidence to the Commission that while on a camping trip with Father Paul Bongiorno he told Bongiorno of Ridsdale's abuse and went into great detail.
So we have the Royal Commission totally ignoring this evidence, not bothering calling Bongiorno as a witness despite this evidence and outrageously claiming Pell..just a priest like Bongiorno (but actually caught up in office matters and not going on camping trips) must have known.
The one thing social media and all the media Pell Attack dogs went crazy on for a few years was a claim by a convicted pedophile David Ridsdale (nephew of Gerard) that he told Pell of abuse yet the RC accepts this was not true.
Just bizarre and an example of how the hyperventilating Media Mob completely ignore this small fact today after about 5 years of castigating Pell over it and simply accepting Ridsdale's claim verbatim.

# David Ridsdale was the self appointed "victim advocate" (Christ they are dangerous) that the ghastly Tim Minchin paid to go Rome to "confront" Pell to the distress of other victims.
When the real tale is told it's going to be a blockbuster..if anyone remembers in a couple of years.
Needless to say the ABC Attack Dogs have been chorusing that Andrew Bolt (who has been proved right each time) had gone to ground but the fools should have known he would comment on it tonight as he has ..and torn the RC Report apart.
