In The Know You are absolutely right, Anthony. Either way the prospects are terrifying. Despite my frequent protestations about the illegal invasion, I'm personally unsure which option (stay or go) would be the best. We should never have got into this situation, but now we are, we should look for the best way out (in the interests of others) and not just for ourselves.

Incredibly, one of the Neo-Con Nutters who was an architect of the Iraq oil-grab, was on Newsnight last night, and "selling" the "reasons" why action should be taken against Iran. Out of the frying pan ... ?

Anthony It is difficult to guess what the implications of an immediate British withdrawal from Iraq would be, so I'm not getting involved in that part of your post, ITK!

The moral stance would be for US troops to get straight out as well, which would, as you say, lead to the situation working itself through with time. This is a frightening prospect though. What a terrible price to pay there would be. Similar to the carnage of the Former Yugoslav states working things through. Or worse.

The truth is we've created an horrific mess out of which there is no clean and satisfactory escape route.
In The Know The Guardian today reports US "unease" at the imminent withdrawal of British troops from Iraq.

The UN is advised to withdraw all personnel immediately -

What do posters think will be the immediate result of a British withdrawal?

Hasten US withdrawal?
Lead to US strengthening its position?
All-out war with other countries involved?

The current position has potential devastating consequences. Many of us warned AGAINST this debacle - and we have been proved right - but a quick "run like hell" could be even more devastating longterm, maybe?

Or is it a case of "this has to work its way through" and that can only begin after a total withdrawal by the illegal invaders and oil-grabbers?
