I used the Christmas No1 hype many times to break obscure records - perhaps the greatest was persuading the tabloids that Hamsters might beat Cliff to the slot with my Cuban Boys, but it was always useful in the last century. Sadly, since I left the industry (thanks to Surrey Police andMax Clifford) in 2000, the impact has disappeared. A No1 now means nothing - at Christmas or any other time. I quite like the mad LadBaby and his loony Sausage Rolls but I'm upset that, since I departed, music globally has become a luxury, usually a specialist luxury, and raises very little money for anyone, thus removing the art from serious consideration as a form of creativity.
If you'd like a burst of nostalgia about happier times, especially when Melodies and Lyrics reigned, do watch The Great ReSet this holiday.
