JK2006 Actually, as you know Hedda, I blame society. Democracy simply doesn't work anymore. If you give the vote to the people, they will increasingly elect the easy option. Simplistic slogans work. Trump and Boris are indeed examples of the new world, dominated by media (in Trump's case, Social Media). Democracy will elect Autocrats (I bet Trump gets re-elected). Great if they are decent, intelligent, benign autocrats. Disaster if the become Dictators, as they nearly always do.

Witness how Boris lied so blatantly about 100s (?) of new hospitals and billions for the NHS..idiotic and blatant lies that no-one could possibly fulfill but it's as though the mountain of lies completely overcome a goodly proportion of the population.

Johnson's Brexit lies are legendary but can anyone really remember them with the ghastly media we have?

I think it is even worse than this Hedda. I think the majority don't even care any longer that their politicians are lying. It has become a new normal. Very much hastened by ghastly Trumps & Johnsons. But accepted by the majority of people who don't have much of an attention span or tolerance for nuance now.

I'm sorry MAIL (the best but also the nastiest paper in the UK) but you'll soon have to do a U turn. The main reason Boris is so unpopular is because of stupid Brexit (which the Mail supported) as voters (who don't care for one second whether there were ever parties in Downing Street) are starting to realise it can only damage this country.

Brexit is a big part of it but mainly because he is a pathological liar and always has been.

Politicians can get away with lies and often do. Starmer blatantly lied to seize the leadership of Labour but we are yet to see if his lies are opportunist or pathological.

Boris is very much like Donald Trump who lies with great ease and like Boris got away with it for a long time.

It's why criticism of Joe Biden is so wrong when he's trying to explain a truth. People confuse pathological lying with someone being in control.

Witness Trump's appalling lie just before the 2020 election when he infamously told an obvious porkie about his Fabulous New Health Care System he had promised since early 2016....when grilled he easily claimed "it's coming and details will be released in 2 weeks"

Nothing, nada zip. A shocking lie from a man who does it so easily and the lie, if repeated enough times becomes the Big Lie and the "truth" as Josef Goebbels correctly stated.

What is bizarre that politicians when caught out in such blatant lies would be crucified in the media or by their colleagues and certainly an Opposition.

But no longer.
