To me, if someone would definitely have been alive if they hadn't got covid, you can say covid killed them.
It is very complicated in that it seems to magnify some health problems enough to kill you, and some would have died anyway, and others not without a shove from covid.
I am not sure how important the figures are anyway? Once most can go about their business without it being very likely that they are killed, we don't really need to dwell on it.
