The only spin-bowler to better Warne's number of test wickets was Muttiah Muralitharan.
A Sri Lankan, often criticised for his unusual bowling technique, likened by some to throwing.
It was deemed to be caused by a congenital arm defect, and his Wisden and other accolades stand.
What sort of defect? We could probably be arrested for saying it now, but I remember being told at school that the reason girls cant throw or bowl as good as boys is because our arms are shaped wrong.
It meant his arm was bent so he he couldn't help partly throwing the ball while bowling, illegal in cricket, but because it was congenital, he was allowed to keep throwing the ball.
Some things are sacred...

I thought Warne piled on the pounds - big mistake. I bet he smoked and drank - not a good idea for anyone but stupid for an athlete. As for drugs - who cares? Not for me but some indulge. However, everything taken together tended to imply an early death might be on the cards. Just watched George Best on Wogan. I hate watching people be their worst enemy. |
