This was all my position on lockdowns ever was: that the cure would likely end up killing more people than the virus. Sadly, the evidence mounts by the week that this is indeed the case:
To me, it was obvious in 2020. Obvious that a disease nasty to some would prove mild to the majority and many countries were hysterical in their over reaction to media pressure.
No long term thinking, no cost-benefit analysis; just following the media siren call to panic.
Oh but what would have happened if we hadn't locked down - you just can't say! Yes I can: Sweden. Oh but Sweden is not the UK! No, obviously; but it is perfectly comparable enough. Well we Brits wouldn't have been sensible like the Swedes....and on the silly excuses go.
I think people simply can't bear to internalise the scale of the mistake that has been made.
They looked in their induced panic to scientists who were producing hypothetical models of worse case scenarios, and then fell for the Gov line that decisions about lockdown were scientific not political.
But they were political and made to satisfy a population irrationally aroused by a feral media.
Because what the virus may or may not be capable of unchecked was only one half of the question. Despite it constantly being presented as a logically whole and coherent question - quite deliberately - for over two years.
The whole question was whether our reaction to the threat posed by this particular virus was proportional and justified; given all the deaths and economic ruin that would - clearly - result.
This is only partly - and not principally - concerned with virology; and those who shouted us down for assuming we knew more about science than scientists, were simply too dim to grasp this distinction.
Or perhaps dim is too unkind: so, again, simply unable to process the magnitude of the mistake being made. And why was this: because the misleading coverage was upheld by nearly all mainstream media and politicians 24/7.
To think like us was to deny one's very senses!
A virus apparently shut down economies, health centres, schools, airlines - not politicians making decisions. We were shamelessly drip-fed this disingenuous language for two years and more, around the clock.
It was never "Lockdowns shut schools". Always "Covid shuts schools". 24/7 two years. And make no mistake they knew exactly what they were doing. The debate, the cost benefit analysis, was silenced from the outset.
It still, largely, is.
There was only one way to die for two years. Because the media "forced" politicians to be seen to be protecting us from one way to die at ANY cost.
Yes, there have been media and moral panics for hundreds of years. But the damage a now totally irresponsible mainstream media missile - loaded with glib and spineless politicians - can wreak is now positively nuclear...
