At least Charles wouldn't question whether the french are friends or Enemies, say that The first minister of Scotland should be ignored, or call the first minister of Wales a "low energy Jeremy Corbyn", which is a pretty ageist comment. Also, he wouldn't say that we could regain Crimea militarily, provoking world war 3.

Precisely why I say I broadly agree with this thread Robbie.

A few years ago I was Republican. I am in favour of our monarchy now for practical (not flag waving) reasons: our politicians are so low-level now it is required.

However, if Charles or William are to do some positive good as opposed to being merely figurative, then I fear for the institution.

They would have to put themselves in opposition to the "democratic" powers by doing so.
JP Meadows Precisely what I was thinking.

I've been saying for ages that Democracy no longer works. It allows Government and Laws to be dictated by a majority of the mainly brain dead population. People vote for good hair, nice teeth and truisms dictated by the media. But a Constitutional Monarchy gives Democracy the best chance as long as the Monarch is good, decent, diligent and well intended. Our Queen has been, for 70 years. I'm a big Charles fan and think he will continue that tradition. Unlike many (media) I hope he WILL exert pressure on our Governments. Example - a phone call from the new KING to the CEO's of the ten biggest energy companies would ensure a £100 billion donation to keep energy prices low. Visits by the KING to China, Russia and America could cause massive changes to climate control that politicians will NEVER achieve. I think a Benign Autocracy is the best government but without that a good monarchy can be a great success.

I do broadly agree with this but we need to remember what happened to Charles I when he tried to govern by conscience through Royal perogative. Charles III will, I am fairly certain, retain his head; but the "democratic" powers will not accept this model. This is one reason I fear for the institution now.

Honey Why would hugely wealthy CEOs give a stuff what The King thinks?
