Countries who's citizens enjoy broad civic freedoms such as ours can wage war on other countries and inflict casualties. But this doesn't make them "unfree" for their citizens.
I think we are just talking at cross-purposes, about different things WT.
Consistency not cross-purpose nor conflation.
The hypocritical US/UK falsely claim to promote broad civic freedoms at home and Worldwide. While deviously denying through impeneterable bureaucratic barriers at home, such freedoms to numerous victims of injustice daring to complain, e.g. Jonathan King & Co Victims of injustice.
And, Worldwide waging endless unjust wars for Military, Banks, Media huge profits, deviously masked as delivering so called 'Democracy'; while mass murdering millions including children!
Plus, the World's worst war-crimanals U.S.A. don't even regognise the International Criminal Court.

Yes but I responded to your initial thread point which was about auditing/access to information regarding the work of public bodies; the level of corruption or active infringements on our liberties from these bodies is an entirely different question.
Perhaps my using "free society" was misleading. But it is all relative, of course.
I am concerned about the erosion of our freedoms; lockdown restrictions being the worst recent example: the state telling us we can't hug an elderly relative. I have concerns over the current Government restricting the right to protest.
Compared to Afghanistan (where we learn today The Taliban has banned women from entering parks) we are, though, a free society; lockdowns having been the result of State-panicked stupidity rather than a desire to restrict people.
