Watching Strictly dance to a Cilla hit (You're My World) reminded me of my third year as Producer and Writer of the Brits (1992?). Cilla was my main star award giver and afterwards I went back to her dressing room and thanked her. She said "It was wonderful" and I said "I'm quitting. Don't enjoy the pressure" (label bosses were trying to get me to put on their priorities - I remember Tori Amos being pushed at me; I refused). "You must stay; the industry needs you", she said (I loved her; she was an absolute sweetheart; I knew her when she had the dodgy nose). My mentor Michael Hurll said "You can't quit JK - they'll guarantee you £250,000 a year for life - for 3 weeks work". He and Cilla were great pals. But quit I did and have never regretted it. I've been lucky enough have only done, in my life, things I enjoyed (even cleaning toilets in prison).
