Green Man
I liked Johnny Carson he was dry and sarcastic. A lot of Americans I know can't understand sarcasm and saw Carson as rude.
He was similar to Clive Anderson who gets off with badinage and swordplay. He loves to get it back even. I met Clive Anderson he is superb gent.
Like many entertainers Carson was a troubled man.
Dick Cavett was great with actors however I always thought he was out off his depth with musicians and the U.S counter culture at the time.

Dick Cavett was way better than Parkinson. More intelligent, more assured, more knowing, more charming.
Parky was in the right place at the right time. As soon as he wasn't - namely, when the reality TV 'stars' became the kind of guests he'd have to accept - he struggled. The Meg Ryan debacle was a classic example of how brittle his interviewing technique actually was. If they were happy to just talk and talk - he was fine. If they needed thoughtful treatment, he was left stranded.
And, as the JK 'chats' show, he was really poor at dealing with anyone spiky.
The BBC VT staff used to make a Christmas tape of outtakes every Christmas, and clips of Parky snarling at floor managers used to feature regularly.

Gawd you were on about the meejah and "good story" right back then.
Reminds when I had a meeting with Andy Warhol in NYC about a proposed visit to Oz he was keen on and I said "the media there can be quite vicious (why they always got a job on Fleet Street) and they liable to call you a phony and fake" and Andy responded.. "oh how wonderful no-one has said that for years".

You were very prescient on the media - your analysis fits even better today than back then.
Thought Parky hit a bum note with his snarky response to your hearty praise of his show; but otherwise great interview, you just don't get them like this anymore...
