I do like Steve Coogan's work but he can be bloody insufferable at times, just like ALan Partridge. Yes, maybe he is playing himself after all!
I am sure Rob Brydon and Coogan could have made an inside joke on The Trip about why he can't drive.
I was a huge fan of Coogan back in the day. I even liked the Saxondale character he created. I liked the references to rock and metal music. Sunshine, in which he plays a father with a gambling problem, was a good miniseries.

He's pulled the same trick twice and got away with it. This story annoyed me when I read it yesterday. You're quite right.
