I can't disagree with the observations and conclusions about my remarks - which were meant to be more thought provoking, than anything else.
But certainly the rise in the popularity of sports has been phenomenal - with women also joining in, in droves recently. The reasons include the following.
More leisure time; satellite/internet; high revenues; enormous variety; advertising potential; broadcasting expertise; competition/rivalry etc. |

Looking at religions (v sport) - it seems that sport is a lot more popular!
The data doesn't show anything of the sort Barney.
It shows that, e.g, football may have more followers than Christianity by a region. However, both charts just break down global population by the most popular sports and religions.
The data shows the same "popularity" for religions and sport. Because it is measuring populations by association, not commitment to rugby or zoroastroism.
In other words it is click-bait that shows no more than vague associations.
You don't think they polled everyone in the world, right? |

Both charts simply assume favour for a particular sport or religion by geographical population. The data shows the same "popularity" for religions and sport.
