Al Gershwin Penalty shootouts are great entertainment and were introduced around 1970 to reduce the number of replays in key competitions.

It's important to keep adapting football to the modern world (and increased matchloads), although VAR hasn't been a great success.

Other sports change too. Gaelic Football now awards 2 points (instead of 1) for an over the bar kick/score, from over 40 metres.

This is to encourage long distance shooting. And it'd be hard to imagine many sports without red/yellow cards - relatively new!
