Even the cinemas are hanging on for dear life.

Our cities (and coastal resorts) have gone right down hill.

The centres of towns and cities are now seriously affected by new shopping centres being built on the outskirts - where people go to shop, leaving the old high streets to die.
Good examples are Eastbourne and Portsmouth - the busy retail outlets, in the latter area, at Gunwharf Quay (ex-navy/waterfront property) reinvigorate themselves in the evening.
With businesses and properties taking on an entertainment/nightlife roll for a totally different clientele - incorporating cinemas, casinos, bars and restaurants. The transformation is stunning.

I couldn't disagree with all these comments more.
Towns and cities are deeply unique, but yes you need to pay attention to more than charity shops or Turkish barbers; transient details.
Look at the buildings. In particular look up from the neon glare of the turkish barbers to the rooftops in Birmingham or London. There are sediments of history layered everywhere.
Anyone finding these places mere "shit holes" I would recommend looking at what your own mind is bringing to the encounter.
There is enchantment to be found if you change how you look.

I wonder if Billy Moore has made more from Youtube than he did as a drug kingpin and an underground bare-knuckle fighter.
All UK towns are the same it's charity shops with the same brands of clothes, the same media over and over(records and CDs) and tacky men's clothes, vape shops, barbers, betting shops, Costa, cafes with expensive and bland menus and if you are a lucky a McDonalds.
Men's clothes are becoming harder to buy in the high street. I did kit out my wardrobe last week but it is staggering that most of my suits, ties, formal shirts and blazers were charity shop finds. It's not by choice but mostly what I can find that fits me.
Causal T-shirts are mostly from supermarkets same as my jeans as Sainsbury is the only place I can find jeans that fit like a dream.
