hedda Very sad case.

I can't understand why they didn't have carers especially as they weren't short of cash.

Was there a family breakdown or perhaps he had already financially taken care of his children.
Jo It seems that the rat infestation had been in buildings/vehicles outside the main residence.

Gene Hackman's wife had been his sole inheritor. He did have children but they weren't named in his will.

Gene Hackman's $4m mansion was 'infested' with rats and became a 'breeding ground' for hantavirus that killed his wife Betsy Arakawa - before he tragically died days later

… The results revealed that the primary residence was deemed 'low-risk' with no signs of a rodent infestation inside. …

Hackman's 1995 will listed Arakawa - whom he married in 1991 - as his sole inheritor.

Arakawa's will meanwhile revealed that if the spouses were to die within 90 days of each other, the proceeds from the estate would be donated to charity. ...

Hackman's children not named in actor's $80m will

… Legal documents obtained by the BBC show Hackman, 95, named Arakawa as his sole beneficiary in 1995, with the last update to the will in 2005. …

Arakawa's own will left her assets to Hackman, with a provision that if they died within 90 days of each other, her estate would go to a trust and later be donated to charity after covering medical expenses. ...
Green Man Or she was just too stubbon to hire caregivers. Sadly, maybe looking after Hackman 24/7 was too much for her to do housework.

Not every parent is close to their children. Maybe his acting skills were better than his parenting skills.
Downing Street Cat Yes. Seems to me she was struggling to cope as the Great man's dementia overtook him. A real tragedy this. And very upsetting.
Jo Inside Gene Hackman’s ‘rodent-infested home’ — where loose items and food created a breeding ground for hantavirus

Makes you wonder how much contact they had with their family.
