Anthony It's a perfectly normal linguistic phenomenon that people change their accents in different social situations.

I found myself involuntarily speaking something far closer to standard English when doing an interview for Macedonian television during Eurovision than the East Midlands accent I would use when speaking with my parents.
Angel Sheena Easton " forgot " her accent when she moved to the States. The Scots let her know how they felt about her on her return to perform a free gig in Glasgow on New Years eve. Barrowman's fared better somehow. I find it quite insulting that he can just switch when it suits.
JC I've seen so much of this man on TV that I intentially avoided this show.

Overkill!

By the way, what did happen to Pauline Quirk - one of the BBC's previous favourite people? There was a time you couldn't switch on without seeing her.

Will they eventually drop Barrowman in the same way? Will the public care?
JK2006 The show started off very interesting. He's a very attractive man, both intelligent and entertaining.

But little in the "Nature or Nurture" debate answered the "was he born gay or made gay?" question.

And half way through it started getting dull with all the "Oh my god I haven't seen you in 25 years" stuff.

For me the fascinating part was how his American accent turned into broad Scots the moment he joined his parents.

Was he born or made Scottish?
