It means a lot in Scottish national terms. I agree with JC. The SNP have done more for Scotland in the the last 14 months than labour have in years. There is a genuine belief that what the SNP set out to do in their agenda will become a reality. Another massive step towards independence. Bring it on!

On its own the result is a "local" affair - SNP v New Labour and means very little in national terms.
The problem for New Labour is that they lost a Council Election in London last night with a celeb candidate ( Blur Drummer ) in a safe Labour Council seat..........
They are over as a force in politics and Gordon Brown is basically a caretaker until Cameron takes over.
Lets hope the New Tories have better ideas and and try and clear up the mess we are in.....if they dont then we are all in trouble.

It might be slightly more than that, JK. The SNP are the ruling party in Scotland and have been gathering support steadily throughout Labour's time in office. Life-long Labour voters in Glasgow are saying that this is not real Labour and they no longer feel loyalty to the party. It's not just by-election blues.

I got the biggest ever vote in a by-election that wasn't about a single issue - in Epsom in the late 70s - all the votes disappeared in the General Election.
