I found him to be a rather strange bloke but who can forget his brilliant and menacing performance in Mel Gibson's Braveheart ?
He should have got an Oscar for that film and he was possibly one the very greats who just missed out on some good roles. Sad.

The incredibly negative reaction he got after the last episode of The Prisoner when it first aired also made him very wary of the media

Very sad - mind you 80 is a good age (he says as he passes 64)...
I remember trying to get him onto Good Evening to talk about The Prisoner and he refused, saying (like Julie Christie), an actor should speak other's lines and never become a celebrity in their own right.
An interesting (and valuable as we get more experience) point of view.
