Clunes actually appeared in the series in the 1980s and was very, very good. I think he is actually very posh in real life.

emmapeelfanclub Thank Christ for that. I think that would had been ghastly!
robbiex It appears that Martin Clunes turned down the chance of becoming Doctor Who, if this link is to be believed. Apparently the beeb couldn't afford him. I don't think Clunes would have made a good Dr Who. I can't stop thinking of him playing a slobbish bloke on 'Men behaving badly'.
