wasn't it thatcher who said we don't need manufacturing all we need is services ? yes it was,
unlike germany who are and will continue to be a lot stronger than we are despite the merging with a bankrupt east germany
well the services that thatcher promoted and encouraged have failed due to the deregulation that started in thatchers "reign" and continued under new labour (a continuation of thatcherism) and now we are in a mess to say the least
history will review thatcher's reign with a cold hard factual eye not rose tinted spectacles and the verdict will be damning
I do agree that the Worse case scenario is probably only a 5% chance.
But we insure our houses and so on for an even smaller chance of something happening and hand over thousands of pounds in our lives.
Therefore I do think that everyone should do a "survival" audit - and do it as a family. Our ancestors did this all the time because of wars etc and knew how to survive. Today I believe all of us have lost some of that survival sense.
It was the Buncefield Explosion which cleared the shelves due to supply problems which reminded me of the fragility of our supply chain - and the South East is so crowded food would run out in hours in a time of emergency.

Mrs Thatcher encouraged self sufficiency. Large industry was failing and so she helped people to form their own businesses so that they were not dependant on the one employer who might go bust tomorrow, and she helped strengthen our agriculture which is what keeps us fed.
Nu-Labour has destroyed our agriculture, having little understanding of the countryside. They think we can always buy from Europe - but if there was another war in Europe we'd be isolated and in deep do-do.
Quite a few of the people I know who were encouraged to start businesses under Mrs Thatcher are still operating and seeing growth today.
What destroyed our larger industries? Unions and greed. Huge wage demands resulting in hiked up prices driving customers to look elsewhere (usually overseas). Thankfully, Mrs Thatcher delivered us from most of that.

There is method to BR's madness !..and much truth in what he says.
I believe the financial crisis is a calamity of major proportions but I don't agree that it's Brown's fault-it started right back with Maggie and Ronnie but they were just instruments in the hands of others.
Those in power with real wealth never forgave the great US president FDR who they considered a class traitor and a socialist for his New Deal to cure the woes at the time. These are people who were like the great Robber Barons of the 1890's who first brought the US to it's knees.
They are like feudal lords who think everyone should still be serfs. It's madness to believe this thinking doesn't still abound. They were there cheering on Hitler and the Nazis and they weren't just the German industrialists-plenty of US & UK powerful figures agreed with the Nazis.
The greatest scam of all time has been "Gloablisation" with the quite awful justification that it's to aid third world poverty. The countries who have invested most in globalisation have all lost there manufacturing bases-the US, UK, Germany, France , Australia etc-all have moved manufacturing off-shore.
You want to survive ?..work out a service that the Chinese need..despite their cut-backs they are still the coming force..welcome to 1984 !! (just a quarter of a decade late).
One plus-enetertainment and the good times boom in these times..remember the Roaring Twenties !!
