I've been saying this for years Emma and it will happen - probably to a Sunday tabloid - before much longer.
An enforced day or two of non publication would be lethal. |

Maybe, instead of fining a newspaper, they could be banned from going to print for a week. Or would that be classed as stifling the free press? |

Sun pays damages over Muslim bus driver slur
A London bus driver today accepted £30,000 damages - for libel and breach of privacy - from The Sun over a claim that he ordered passengers off his vehicle so that he could pray
"The article went on to allege that the passengers later refused to re-board the bus, because they spotted a rucksack and feared he may be a fanatic and therefore, it is to be inferred, a terrorist."
Loughrey said the newspaper now accepted that the allegations were false.

What with little Alfie still thinking a shared bag of sweets causes a baby, you would think the Sun King/Dirty Digger would haul Ms Wade over the coals. But think again-the truth never matters to Murdoch but sales do.
Alfie's tale resulted in the greatest hits the Sun's website ever(adverts !) got and sales of print copies must have soared-given the British public's curious interest in underage sex.
No doubt those who believe Muslims are the cause of all the nation's ills snapped up similar copies of this harmeless bus driver's menacing rucksack.
Murdoch balances what is paid out in libel fees against sales. Way back in the late 1970's when an enterprising East German, skilled in forging Nazi memorbillia passed off his greatest creation-the Hitler Diaries to the Sunday Times..Murdoch's historical adviser who at first declared them genuine(despite glaring errors like Adolph penning "mein Got I'll make that British dog Harold Vilson pay" but before publication said they're fakes..Rupert said publish them anyway-" afterall " he declared "we're in the entertainment business".
Thus one can trace back the decline of the great British newspaper industry to that day. Others of course are forced to play "catch me up"-just as Fox News in the USA has led to the decline of good news channels like CNN and eventually the larger CBS, NBC etc. |
