Innocent Accused I'm amazed at how long they did last!
After vinyl single sales fell towards the end of the 80s it never really found another niche market.
They seemed to really become a 'jack of all trades, master of none'.
Wonder if WH Smiths will go the same way?
Foz The issue with Woolworths is that it didn't adapt to the problems it knew it had 10 years ago because it was too big (and top management were probably too lazy) to adapt and change to suit the market. There were also too many of them.
JC Claire's branch of Woolworths was one of the few which was making a profit, so maybe her Wellworths will do ok. She does not have a chain of mostly failing shops to bring hers down.

I wish her success.

My own High Street is collapsing now that Woolworths has gone. It was our biggest draw. Now most people go to the out of town supermarkets, so the other High Street shops are struggling and some have already closed.
robbiex I'm glad to see that Woolworths is sort of making a comeback. However if Claire is opening a new shop based on a previous shop that has been struggling for several years, then surely it is going to have the same problems, once the initial honeymoon period is over.
giles2008 I totally agree. So much more of an inspiration to us all than spongers like the Goody creature. Judging by the news coverage of the event and the crowds at the opening she will do well . Same shes not opening in Portsmouth.
