godiver Ordinary people?
JC My last experience of the underground was when my train was cancelled and we all had to transfer. Everyone was sitting in the carriage, as usual not talking to each other. They were looking around after the announcement, and so I said, "I think we have to change trains."

A woman looked me and said, "Oh, do we? I wasn;t sure if he'd said that or not."

Then a man chipped in, "I think he did say that."

So I decided I had better get up and leave as an example of what tto do in response to the announcement. I switched trains and they other followed. I wonder if they would still be sitting there if I hadn't made the first move.
JK2006 Well Veritas you've rumbled me - I always travel on the subway in NYC and one day said to a friend "I'm constantly being recognized by English tourists on the subway in New York but never in London - I wonder why that is" and he answered "that's because you never travel on the underground in London you silly queen".

He was, of course, quite right.
veritas So one has been on the underground at last !

You remind me of a very rich Southern lady who lives Uptown in New York. I was leaving a small party she had one night and she asked me where I was going..I said on the Underground. She asked me why and when I said to get home she said "how quaint..how long has that been happening ?"

The tube is the only way to get around London. But I get very claustrophibic on it.
JK2006 I don't know if I was recognized - I was too busy gazing about like a child in a sweet shop.
Most people were foreign anyway, as on the streets of London.
