BR Many musical stars struggle to sing more freely in a pop way. Classical stars can struggle even more. That is why Katherine Jenkins ( who is wonderful at what she does ) struggles with pop songs. Even Steve Balsimo ( Jesus Christ Superstar ) after getting a Sony contract never had any pop success. Michael Ball ( not a trained singer ) has had more success than most and Elaine Paige has done well but has stuck mainly to musical theatre hits in a pop style.
Angel Its not a woman!!! Its Steve Coogans brother for crying out loud!

I disagree JK.

I have written one West End musical and had another 4 performed.....so I have some experience of musicals.

Her voice is exceptional.

When judging a musical voice for theatre the control is everything. e.g can a voice sound as convincing when at full belt and at emotional piannissimo ! and can the singer achieve that without the listener noticing the gear changes in the song..........

Well Susan Boyle manages to do that and then some. I have seen many of the greats do the Les Mis song she sang. Her version was powerful but still maintained the emotion and I have to say I was shocked because it was the best that I have ever heard it sung ( I wont embarrass the big names by listing them )

Her version of CRY ME A RIVER is equally thrilling - even though her voice has too much reverb on it for my liking ( The 1999 recording )

She has the musical ability of emotion in her voice ( Michael Ball and Elaine Page are of course the market leaders in this ) but allied to almost perfect technical skills ( Sarah Brightman - Charlotte Church etc ) which means that she would be capable of singing any type of music without too much problem. Though pop is probably beyond her.

Funny you say that because Katherine Jenkins was on the BBC earlier on John Barrowman's new show and was singing a 'pop song' and it did not seem to suit her voice one bit.
PBS I've now heard Susan Boyle's version of Cry Me A River. I thought it was pretty good but, for me, the ultimate version was by Mari Wilson. Susan could probably sing 'Sometimes', the theme to Champions which Elaine Page also sang. That kind of 'belt it out' number. Her voice isn't subtle enough for Cry Me A River.
robbiex I think that it is very patronising that the panel assumed that because susan was overweight, middle-aged, and not conventionally attractive they assumed that she was going to be a terrible singer. Ant and Dec built up the mockery before-hand as well. I don't think that she will be a massive star, she is a good singer, not brilliant, she doesn't really have the screen or stage presence to be big. She will maybe have a minor album hit, doing an album of musical cover versions for mums and dads, nothing more.
