Apropos second hand booksellers: I love to think of them keeping going, but some of them really need to get their act together. This morning I finally tracked down a copy of a book I wanted to get as a present for a friend. I ordered it, really delighted with myself, and then, an hour later, I got this message from the seller:
I am sorry. Printed the label, got the envelope and reached for the book only to find that my whippets were eating it. It is too far gone even to send it you for free I'm afraid. Please order elsewhere. Obviously it was not a good idea to call my little enterprise after the dogs!!!
Eaten by whippets? I ask you!

Yes, lovely editions. (Less attractive but still appealing in another way, IMHO, are 'Faber Finds' - have you heard of them?. Rather handy presents for bookish friends as well as nice treats for oneself. Often printed on demand via their website. The range has some lost classics and quite a few oddities.)

Which will be my annual Dickens reread (haven't read it for over 50 years) - the new Penguin paperback is gorgeous - full of those magnificent pen and ink drawings, packed with extras - I'm really looking forward to it. But don't they do paperbacks well these days?
